Spike Sarcoma out of Roanoke!

Yesterday, Amazon visited Carilion Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic to present a $10,000 check in honor of Spike Sarcoma! The event was a part of Amazon’s Goes Gold Initiative, which seeks to raise awareness and donations for pediatric cancers. Laini Hawkins proudly accepted the donation, which came as a complete surprise to her. A sarcoma survivor herself, Laini is no stranger to Carilion Children’s Pediatric Oncology Clinic. Laini is a survivor of myxoid liposarcoma, a rare cancer that affects muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the lining of blood vessels. Laini may only be 15, but she is already using her life experiences to better the world. Her compassion and composure is remarkable to witness.

The Amazon donation will help support Laini’s Spike Sarcoma Volleyball Fundraiser for Pediatric Cancer on November 23. The fundraiser will be at Spectrum Sports Academy in Roanoke.  The inspiration behind this event stemmed from wanting to help other children and to bring more awareness to pediatric sarcoma. Laini regularly brings in gift cards to brighten the days of other teens receiving treatment at the clinic and for the last couple months has spent her time securing thousands of dollars in donations to support CMN’s Cure Kids Cancer initiative. She truly is a miracle child in more ways than one!!

Laini accepted the Amazon check surrounded by her parents, sister and her Carilion physician, Dr. Violet Borowicz. On camera, Laini was also surprised with a Spike Sarcoma jersey and a volleyball signed by the treatment team who saved her life.
